Abstract Memory-Scapes

This series of paintings explore memories from a time during the transformation from adolescence to adulthood.  These paintings are the impact  memories translated with a particular mood.  Each decision, the paint, the medium, the tactile surface becomes represenative of the real story of the memories they portray.

Drawings

Justin works directly from life when drawing.  While at Buffalo State College he worked copying the works of the old masters.  his observation is through direct calculation and measuring.  Through vigerous practice he has honed his skills as a draftsman.  Justin continues his observation of the figure as a common practice experimenting with charcoal, lead, ink, silverpoint and conte crayon.

Abstract Landscapes

Justin Dahl's abstract landscapes are a blend of his honed traditional practice with his contemporary experimentation.  The landscapes are directly from memory and show a glimpse of the ideas associated with his conceptual design.

Representational Paintings

Justin's Representational paintings are created using strong traditional techniques combined with a modern "painterly' suggestion.  All paintings are painted on site and alla prima or all at once.  Justin works directly from observation to give a personal account of the moment and place.

Material Experimentation

Experiments start with thick layers of wet oils set on fire.  This causes them to change viscosity resulting in spreading quickly.  MAny methods to extinguish the fire are used causing multiple effects in texture and color.  Justin also experiments with large amounts of thinner, medium, pigments, detergent and oil.  The outcomes of these experiments allow for heightened forms of expression.
